Much Better than Test Strips Jan 05, 2011
By T. Roth Before getting to my review, I want to point out that this kit (K-2106) is for bromine only, not both chlorine and bromine as the title suggest, unless there was a recent change. However, the manufacturer's website still lists the K-2106 kit as bromine. K-2006 would be the same kit but for chlorine: Taylor Complete FAS-DPD Pool Water Test Kit K-2006.
The product description refers to commercial pools and spas, but don't think that this product is not needed for home use. Test strips are not very precise and it can be hard to match the strip colors to the readings printed on the container. To keep your water safe, you need to use a high quality reagent test kit such as this one.
I have been using this kit for a year for maintaining the water quality in my 500-gallon hot tub. The water quality has never been better or more consistent over time since I switched from test strips to this test kit. I was hesitant about buying this because it's so much more expensive than test strips, but after a year of weekly testing I still have half to three-quarters of the test reagents remaining. Also, poor water quality can reduce the life of your pumps and heaters, so in the long run the price is well worth it.
The product description doesn't tell you a lot about the test kit. It includes four groups of tests: Bromine, pH (plus acid demand and base demand tests), Total Alkalinity, and Calcium Hardness. Simple, easy to follow instructions are printed inside the lid of the durable plastic box. For each test, you just fill the vial with the correct amount of water, add the specified drops of reagent, and swirl. Then you match the color (for pH) or add a second reagent until the color changes.
This kit includes a water balance calculator. This is three discs connected in the center. You turn each disc to the pH, hardness, and alkalinity readings, then find the saturation index based on the water temperature. The saturation index should fall between 0.5 and -0.5 to prevent cloudy water, scale formation, or corrosion. If your water is outside of this range, check the treatment tables in the booklet included with the kit to determine how to correct the water quality. This 64-page booklet is also a great introduction to water chemistry and pool and spa sanitation.
To summarize, if you want to have the highest-quality water in order to keep your pool or spa safe and to prevent corrosion of your equipment, you need a high-quality liquid test kit, not cheap test strips. It takes a little more effort, but it will guard your health and your investment.

Good Test Kit for Hot Tubs Apr 20, 2011
By jayme robertson The kit works very well. Get much more accurate readings than using test strips. Also has a nice booklet that covers pool/hot tub chemistry.
The kit does not test for Chlorine as the name implies, but I knew that going in. If you need chlorine and bromine testing, you should probably buy the K-2006 and then buy the bromine reagant seperately. If you do it the other way around, there are more things that you would need to buy (two reagants for Chlorine plus CYA stuff). The Taylor website lists the contents of each package so you can figure out which reagant to order you need. They also have the instructions for both kits.
